Crows Nest is different from most of the region. Toowoomba Regional Council says the town uses a Common Effluent Disposal (CED) scheme, and properties outside the town on acreage generally use their own on-site systems.
How the Crows Nest CED scheme works
According to council, each CED property has its own septic tank. The solids settle in the tank, and the liquid flows to council's network instead of on-site trenches. The solids stay in your tank, and pumping it out with a private licensed contractor is the owner's responsibility. If a CED tank is left too long, solids can carry over into the line. More on CED tank pump-outs.
Council's Water Vision 2071 strategy lists upgrading the Crows Nest system from common effluent disposal to a conventional sewer as a short-term project. We haven't seen a timeline, so check with council before planning around it.
What Crows Nest owners most often need
- Septic pump-outs: Toowoomba Regional Council says septic tanks should be desludged every 3 to 5 years by a licensed liquid waste contractor. Pump-out guide.
- AWTS servicing: treatment plants are commonly serviced every 3 months, and the owner must keep a service agreement in place. AWTS servicing guide.
- Problems: smells, gurgling, wet trenches or alarms. What they can mean.
- New or replacement systems: need council plumbing approval first. How approvals work and typical cost ranges.
Getting a provider out to Crows Nest
Send the form or call with your address, system type (if known), and what's happening. We pass it to an independent licensed provider who works in the area. They quote and book directly with you. Ask for their licence details and a written quote before work starts. Travel distance and access (gate width, tank location, wet ground) can affect availability and price.
