What changes the price

  • Tank size and sludge level: bigger or overdue tanks take longer to pump.
  • Access: distance from the truck, buried lids, steep or wet ground.
  • Travel: rural properties further from a provider's base may cost more.
  • System type: an AWTS has ongoing servicing costs a plain septic tank doesn't. See AWTS servicing.
  • Approvals and design: new systems need council plumbing approval with a site and soil evaluation and system design. See council approvals.

Keeping costs down

Toowoomba Regional Council's guidance helps here: keep the AWTS switched on (don't turn it off to save power), keep stormwater out, keep cars off the irrigation or trench area, use septic-safe products, and desludge septic tanks every 3 to 5 years so sludge doesn't carry over and clog trenches. Clogged trenches are one of the dearer repairs in the table above.
