Septic-safe products: what to use and avoid

Your system relies on bacteria to break down waste. A few simple habits help it do its job.

  • Free to use, no obligation
  • Independent licensed providers do the work
  • Toowoomba Regional Council area

Keep these out of the system

  • Wipes (including "flushable" ones), sanitary products, nappies and cotton buds
  • Fats, oils and grease
  • Paint, solvents, chemicals and medicines
  • Large amounts of bleach or disinfectant
  • Food scraps and coffee grounds

Cleaning products

Use cleaning products in moderation, and look for ones the manufacturer labels as suitable for septic systems. Labels aren't independently tested, so moderation matters more than the brand. For an AWTS, your service technician or the manual for your plant is the best guide.

Water use

Spreading out washing loads and fixing leaking taps or toilets avoids flooding the system with more water than it can handle.

Additives

We don't recommend any particular additive. Ask your provider before using one, especially in an AWTS.
